The power of Shaihen magic lies on the shoulders of a maverick gambler. The crisis to which he has brought the Fair Land of Shehaios leaves everyone’s future uncertain. The Magician himself is crippled, struggling to survive, and Caras of Oreath, de facto Defender of the Fair Land, has a problem.

Who is his enemy?

Is it the landless, lawless as-caii who killed his King? The dominant forces of the Empire of the Sacred Union, increasingly riding roughshod over Shaihen traditions and liberties? Or is it the growing belligerence of his own people, rising in protest against the Imperial occupation of their lands?

When the late King’s nephew, Sheldo, burns down an Imperial temple, Shaihen liberty and Imperial rule are set for a head-on collision, with Caras in the middle of it. Matters are not helped by his passionate young daughter, Alsa, who is struggling not only with the normal turmoil of adolescence but also with the developing powers of a Magician.

Meanwhile, Kierce, the Magician, is attempting to contain the growing menace of the lawless as-caii. Is it possible to salvage the peaceful, prosperous future for the Fair Land that King Rainur dreamed of? The dream entrusted to Kierce by a man who knew he would fail…
